August 1, 2025, UP SOLAIR – The Center for Industry Productivity and Competitiveness (CIPC), under the Pahinungod Program of UP SOLAIR, successfully launched the first session of its Learning Session Series with the theme: “Coaching for Impact: Empowering Growth Through Conversations.” Held at the Mini-auditorium of the UP SOLAIR New Building, the onsite session was attended by 20 participants from the manufacturing sector, with representatives coming from Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Bulacan, Rizal, and Metro Manila.

The session was hosted and facilitated by Mr. Arman Mangilinan, opened with a video-led national anthem and prayer, followed by an energizing get-to-know-you activity that helped participants to warm up and connect. A pre-test was administered to gauge their initial understanding of the topic.

Dr. Virgel C. Binghay, the esteemed speaker, CIPC Director and Professor from UP SOLAIR, delivered a comprehensive and practice-based session that explored the definition and benefits of workplace coaching, including how it supports employee growth, problem-solving, and performance improvement. He discussed when coaching is most appropriate, as well as situations where it may not be the ideal approach.

The learning session also emphasized the distinct roles and responsibilities of both coaches and coachees in creating a productive and trusting relationship. Dr. Binghay highlighted core coaching principles such as trust, goal-setting, empowerment, feedback, and reflection, and guided participants through the practical application of structured coaching utilizing a variety of frameworks. He underscored the importance of active listening and powerful questioning as essential skills for fostering growth-oriented, meaningful dialogue in the workplace.

As part of the workshop, participants were divided into 6 groups, each assigned a case study representing a real-world workplace coaching scenario. Using coaching models, they worked together to analyze and answer situational questions, highlighting the practical application of coaching conversations in the manufacturing context, and presented their outputs.

After the main session, participants took a post-test, where four attendees earned perfect scores and were each awarded a special token.

Finally, the participants were asked to complete a
post-event evaluation using a 5-point rating scale. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the program design receiving an average score of 4.91, the resource speaker rated at 4.93, and the learning aids, facilities, host, and technical support averaging 4.80. Participants praised the relevance and quality of the session, noting that “Dr. Binghay shows expertise in the subject matter” and that “so many learnings” were gained. Others expressed appreciation for the event team and speaker, saying “Kudos to the team, we highly appreciate Dr. Virgel Binghay,” and “Looking forward to more inspiring and knowledgeable sessions. This is very helpful for us in the manufacturing industry.” Some participants also suggested conducting more free seminars to reach employees with limited access to paid learning opportunities, and requested that future sessions include topics tailored for the government sector as well.

CIPC extends its deepest thanks to Dr. Melisa Serrano, Dean of UP SOLAIR, for her continued support, and to Rose and Eric for their invaluable assistance throughout the session.

With the success of this first session, CIPC reaffirms its commitment to providing sector-focused, high-impact learning opportunities that serve the public and industry alike.
